Our Research Focus
The Maseno–University of New Mexico (UNM) Research Collaboration brings together state-of-the-art biomedical laboratories, clinical facilities, and a multidisciplinary team of scientists to advance health research in western Kenya. Based at Maseno University
and Siaya County Referral Hospital, the program integrates molecular, genetic, and immunological approaches to understand and combat major infectious and hematological diseases.
Current research focuses on:
- Hematological studies, including sickle-cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies
- Molecular immunological experiments to understand immune mechanisms and vaccine responses
- Evaluation of co-infections and their role in promoting malarial anemia
- Bacterial and virological investigations to identify and characterize pathogens
- Microscopic and molecular-based pathogen diagnosis for improved clinical accuracy
- Genetic studies exploring host and pathogen variations influencing disease outcomes
- COVID-19 surveillance, diagnosis, and immune response studies
